The History Behind Our School
Somewhere around 1984, the villagers of Farato sought a reserved land for a school for the community. This, they were able to secure during the days of Alkali Mbemba Ceesay, who made arrangements for this present location. The school came to be through community service where members of the community, mainly masons came out to do some voluntary work and as compensation for their services, they were given one thousand Dalasis and a bag of rice each. In addition, those who had children in the school were also given scholarships. The school started as an Arabic school under the leadership of Oustas Ebrima Gaye who later sought assistance from the Mingdaw Cultural Centre in Taiwan through one Kissima Sumbundu. Mr Sumbundu was then working at Community Development Association (CADA) also affiliated with the Mingdaw Cultural Centre in Taiwan. He was then the focal point person of Mingdaw Cultural Centre in Gambia. The Mingdaw Cultural Centre accepted the plea and then took charge of the sponsorship of the school under the management of the project was done by Oustas Gaye. Construction work commenced in 1995/6 academic year and the school became functional in September 1996. However, when the benefactors, in the person of Mr Miller visited the school in 1997, he expressed dissatisfaction about his investment in the school and what he really found on the ground visa vis the payment of teachers and infrastructure. A delegation was made to the Head of State and the school was taken from Oustas Cham and given back to the community whose elders decided to give it back to the state. Then, there were only two classroom blocks (those on the southern wing). The school started as a junior secondary school and it was only after the President’s visit in 1998/9 that he promised that the school would be upgraded to provide senior secondary education if students do well in their grade nine examinations. This promise came to pass and the community annexed another area of land to the school and that was the factor responsible for the L-shape.
